Hodgson Russ Press Release

Hodgson Russ is pleased to announce Andrew W. Wright has assumed responsibility as Practice Leader for the firm’s widely respected State & Local Tax (SALT) Practice. He succeeds Christopher L. Doyle, who has led the practice for 25 years. During his tenure, Doyle helped the practice become a nationally recognized leader, enabling the group to serve clients in states beyond New York, including California, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, among others.

“Andrew was the logical choice to serve as the next leader of the firm’s SALT Practice,” said Managing Partner Benjamin M. Zuffranieri Jr. “He is an incredibly talented, thoughtful, and respected partner who will help continue growth of the SALT Practice, while upholding its esteemed reputation and legacy that Chris and many others have built. Andrew’s appointment will also help Hodgson Russ move forward with the firm’s strategic growth plan.”

Wright has in-depth experience in state tax residency and has assisted clients on residency matters ranging from strategic planning through audits and litigation. Wright often counsels clients on structuring transactions and ongoing business relationships to minimize their state and local tax burden.

In his new role, Wright will lead a team of 20 attorneys, along with numerous audit managers, paralegals, and other staff professionals. Doyle will continue his work as a partner in the SALT Practice.

The Hodgson Russ SALT Practice was founded by Paul R. Comeau and is recognized by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. In the late 1980s, the firm’s SALT attorneys handled some of the first residency audit cases in New York State and authored reports and articles for the New York State Bar Association that were subsequently reflected in detailed audit guidelines, and which continue to serve as a model for other states.

Among many significant reported decisions, the Hodgson Russ SALT Practice won a landmark residency case, Gaied v. New York State Tax Appeals Tribunal, in which New York’s highest court issued a groundbreaking decision on the state’s residency rules, solidifying the Practice’s reputation for innovation and excellence.

The SALT Practice has also been awarded prestigious "Best Law Firm" rankings by Best Lawyers/U.S. News & World Report in the categories of National Tier 2, Tax Law and Litigation and Controversy – Tax; Metropolitan Tier 1, Tax Law; and Metropolitan Tier 2, Litigation and Controversy – Tax.
